Apple CEO Tim Cook Teases New ‘Air’ Launch: Is It iPad or MacBook?

A new Apple product is set to arrive soon. Apple’s chief executive officer Tim Cook has teased a new product is coming this week, posting a video on X that says: “There’s something in the Air.” While Cook did not mention what exactly this product is, rumours are rife that MacBook Air is due for an upgrade in March. Apple could refresh the MacBook Air with the new M4 chip. However, rumours also suggest that Apple may bring a new iPad Air model. So, which is it?

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously suggested that Apple may plan to introduce a new MacBook Air model in March. The next Air model will continue to have the same design as the latest one, featuring both 13-inch and 15-inch display sizes. The key change will just be the processor, with Apple planning to equip the Air with an M4 chip. Launched last year in May for the iPad Pro, the M4 chip will bring significant performance and power efficiency. Other than the chip, the MacBook Air refresh will come with increased RAM capacity. The existing model maxes out at 24GB of RAM, but the upcoming model may have a maximum RAM capacity of 32GB.

The MacBook Air’s next model may also include faster memory bandwidth, two additional CPU cores, and a 12MP Center-Stage camera with better video resolution. Gurman said the upcoming model will also expand support for external displays. It could power up to two displays with the built-in display turned on, compared to the existing model’s constraints, which require the lid to be closed to support two external displays.

Cook’s teaser video tends to hint more at the MacBook Air because the visual shows some sort of a device cutting through the word “Air.” Pausing the video exactly at that moment shows a MacBook-style device instead of something like an iPad.

While the MacBook Air is more likely to debut this week, according to Cook’s announcement, an iPad Air is also a possibility. Gurman previously said Apple’s next iPad Air may come sometime around March. The Air refresh may bring a new chipset and maybe support for Apple Intelligence features. Gurman even said Apple may launch both devices together, refreshing the Air lineups for both product categories.
