Why Philippines blocked GoreBox – Firstpost

The Philippines has temporarily blocked GoreBox, a violent online shooting game with more than 10 million downloads, after investigators linked one of the teenage suspects in a deadly school shooting to the platform.

The decision follows a shocking attack at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, where two students aged 14 and 15 allegedly opened fire inside a classroom on Monday, killing three fellow students and injuring 20 others.

Authorities say one of the suspects regularly played GoreBox, a first-person shooter game that allows players to use firearms, explosives and other weapons in highly graphic combat scenarios. The game’s description on Google Play invites users to “obliterate anything” they desire and engage in “brutal combat” using an extensive arsenal of weapons.

The country’s Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has now ordered a temporary block on the game while investigators assess whether online influences may have contributed to the attack.

Why has GoreBox been banned?

Officials insist the move is a precaution rather than a conclusion that the game caused the shooting.
“We cannot ignore possible online influences that may have contributed to this tragic incident,” CICC Undersecretary Aboy Paraiso said while announcing the restriction.

According to authorities, the temporary ban is intended to give investigators time to determine whether the game, or other online platforms, played any role in shaping the suspects’ behaviour.

The government has also pledged broader monitoring of digital spaces frequented by children and teenagers.

What is GoreBox?

Developed by Germany-based F2 Games and launched in 2023, GoreBox is a sandbox-style first-person shooter that can be played alone or in multiplayer mode.

Unlike many mainstream action games, GoreBox emphasises unrestricted destruction. Players can experiment with weapons, explosives and physics-based combat systems that feature graphic depictions of injury and dismemberment.

The International Age Rating Coalition has assigned the game an R18 rating due to its extreme violence and explicit content.

Despite its mature rating, the game has become popular among younger players and has accumulated more than 10 million downloads on Google’s Android platform.

F2 Games has not publicly commented on the Philippine government’s decision.

What do investigators know so far?

Police have filed murder charges against the 15-year-old suspect. The 14-year-old cannot be charged in the same way because he falls below the age of criminal responsibility under Philippine law.

Investigators say the younger suspect appeared to have been heavily influenced by online content and had previously shared violent material on social media.

Authorities also revealed that the firearms allegedly used in the attack belonged to family members. The younger suspect is accused of using a 9mm pistol owned by his aunt, a police officer who has since been suspended. The older suspect allegedly used a revolver registered to his grandfather’s security agency.

Preliminary findings suggest the two teenagers may have planned the attack in advance. Police said the pair reportedly hid in a school bathroom before carrying out the shooting.

Investigators are also examining claims that both boys had experienced bullying at school and may have viewed the attack as retaliation.

Can violent video games cause real-world violence?

That remains one of the most contentious questions surrounding the case.

While Philippine authorities are investigating whether GoreBox influenced the suspects, decades of academic research have failed to establish a direct causal link between violent video games and real-world violent behaviour.

Numerous studies have found that although violent games may temporarily increase aggressive thoughts or emotions in some players, there is little evidence that they lead to serious criminal violence.

A major meta-analysis published in 2020 concluded that the long-term effects of violent video games on youth aggression were close to zero.

Experts often argue that factors such as family environment, mental health, access to firearms, social isolation and bullying are far more reliable predictors of violent behaviour than gaming habits alone.

The shooting has triggered a broader national debate in the Philippines about online radicalisation, school safety and gun access.

Senator Risa Hontiveros warned that some online platforms had become “nests for brainwashing and radicalising our youth”, while lawmakers called for stricter penalties against adults who allow minors access to firearms.

The Department of Justice is also examining whether the incident fits a growing pattern of nihilistic violent extremism — attacks driven by a desire to commit violence rather than by a traditional political or ideological cause.

Meanwhile, education officials have vowed to strengthen school security measures and emergency preparedness programmes.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the government was determined to prevent copycat incidents and avoid a situation similar to that seen in the United States, where school shootings have become a recurring concern.

For now, GoreBox remains inaccessible in the Philippines as investigators attempt to answer a question that extends far beyond a single video game: what combination of online influences, personal circumstances and access to weapons drove two teenagers to carry out one of the country’s deadliest school attacks in recent years?
