Kannada Actress Ranya Rao Arrested For Gold Smuggling At Bengaluru Airport, Sent To 14-Day Judicial Custody



Ranya Rao, a Kannada actress, was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru on Monday night after she was found in possession of 14.8 kg of gold, officials told PTI. Following her arrest, she was presented before an economic offences court, which remanded the actress to 14-day judicial custody. Officials told PTI, that Rao arrived from Dubai on an Emirates flight and had been under surveillance due to her frequent international trips. The arrest was made by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

Following the arrest, she was interrogated at DRI headquarters at HBR layout and a medical examination was conducted at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru. She is said to be a close relative of an IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, serving in Karnataka. Along with gold, a hefty amount in cash has also been seized.

After Rao’s arrest, DRI conducted a thorough inspection at the actress’ Nandavani Mansion flat on Lavelli Road. The inspection was carried out by over five officials, who searched for several hours. During the inspection, officials found ₹2.5 crore at her residence. The officials then took away three big boxes.

The actress, who has also worked with Kiccha Sudeep in Maanikya, is likely to face Enforcement Directorate (ED) trouble. the investigation is on and cops are trying to investigate whether she was alone or linked to any smuggling network.

Ranya made her debut with the Kannada movie Maanikya (2014). She originally hails from the Chikmagalur district of the Indian state of Karnataka. After completing her schooling in Bangalore persuaded to act with accreditation in acting. She has so far done only 3 movies – Maanikya, Wagah and Pataki. Since her last film in 2017, she has been away from the big screens.
