Manpreet Singh equalled former India captain Dilip Tirkey’s record of 412 international appearances on Sunday, but the milestone came in a 2-3 defeat to the Netherlands in the FIH Men’s Pro League. The experienced midfielder reached the landmark during India’s match against the hosts, becoming only the second Indian men’s hockey player to play 412 international matches. He is also the only active player with more than 400 senior international caps. The Netherlands took the lead early through Miles Bukkens in the third minute. India responded six minutes later when Dilpreet Singh found the net to make it 1-1.Koen Bijen restored the Dutch lead in the 23rd minute, but India once again fought back, with Sukhjeet Singh scoring in the 33rd minute to level the contest. However, Timjen Reyenga scored in the 40th minute to put the Netherlands ahead for a third time, and India could not find another equaliser. The defeat spoiled what was otherwise a landmark day for Manpreet, who now shares the Indian record for most international appearances with Dilip Tirkey.Congratulating Manpreet on the achievement, Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey said, “I congratulate Manpreet on reaching this significant milestone, which is a remarkable achievement and reflects his dedication, commitment and consistency over the years.“I wish him the very best for the matches ahead and hope to see him play on many more occasions. We are grateful for his continued contributions to Indian hockey.”Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh also praised the midfielder’s contribution to Indian hockey.“Manpreet Singh’s journey with the Indian Men’s Hockey Team is a reflection of his immense dedication to the sport.“To reach 412 international caps is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the consistency he has shown over the years while representing the country at the highest level.
