BRICS diplomacy gains momentum in New Delhi amid escalating West Asia tensions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held separate meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, amid heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
India is hosting the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 14–15, bringing together top diplomats from the bloc at a time of growing uncertainty over the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
Araghchi’s visit marks his first trip to India since the outbreak of the Iran conflict earlier this year, making the meeting with Modi particularly significant as New Delhi balances its strategic ties across West Asia, Russia, and the broader BRICS grouping.
The Prime Minister met both leaders separately during the high-level diplomatic engagements in the national capital. The discussions are expected to have focused on regional stability, energy security, connectivity, and evolving geopolitical alignments within the BRICS framework.
The visit also comes as India closely watches the impact of the West Asia crisis on global oil markets, shipping routes, and trade flows. Iran remains a key regional player for India, while Russia continues to be one of New Delhi’s largest energy and defence partners.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is being seen as an important platform for emerging economies to coordinate positions on global conflicts, trade disruptions, and reforms in international institutions.
