Lights, camera, traction: film-projecting headlights steer China’s EV feature fight

China’s latest electric vehicle (EV) innovations – from ultra-fast battery charging to headlights capable of projecting films – have drawn strong attention at Beijing’s Auto China show, underscoring how the country’s automotive technology is pulling ahead of global rivals.

As domestic carmakers and key suppliers recast vehicles as “mobile living spaces” powered by artificial intelligence and digital systems, they are increasingly looking beyond the mainland to drive export growth.

“We are developing our capabilities with the global market in mind,” said Jacky Chen Jiacai, chairman of GAC International, at a press briefing during the show.

He added that state-owned GAC Group aimed to expand into 120 countries and regions and achieve annual overseas sales of 1 million vehicles by 2030 – nearly four times its expected deliveries outside mainland China this year.

The Beijing car show, which runs until May 3, features 181 global debuts, with Chinese-developed intelligent EVs dominating the spotlight.

Online interest has also surged. Ethan Robertson, a US-based YouTuber focused on Chinese vehicles, drew significant attention with a live-streamed tour of the show, as overseas viewers marvelled at the technology while lamenting limited access due to trade barriers.
