IPL 2026: Nitish Rana punished for ‘audible obscenity’ after umpire argument in CSK vs DC

Chennai Super Kings won their 1st match of IPL 2026 but with a tensions flared during Delhi Capitals’ clash after a controversial moment involving Tristan Stubbs and a denied glove change request triggered a heated exchange with match officials.The incident unfolded during the closing stages of Delhi’s chase, when Stubbs requested to change his gloves in the 19th over. The batter appeared uncomfortable, struggling with sweat-soaked gloves that were affecting his grip. However, the request was turned down by the fourth umpire, leading to visible frustration in the Delhi camp.Nitish Rana stepped in to question the decision, engaging in a prolonged discussion with the umpire. Rana argued that playing with damp gloves could impact both performance and safety, especially in high-pressure moments of the game, the situation added to the tension already building in the final overs, with Delhi needing a strong finish to stay in the contest. Just moments after the denied request, Stubbs’ innings came to an abrupt end. Attempting to clear the infield, he miscued a shot off Jamie Overton, only to be caught by Noor Ahmad at mid-off. Clearly frustrated, Stubbs walked back to the pavilion and threw his bat and gloves in disappointment, marking a dramatic end to his fighting knock.

Rana penalised for Code of Conduct breach

Following the incident, Rana was fined 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct. The offence fell under Article 2.3, which relates to the use of an audible obscenity during a match. The breach occurred during his argument with the fourth umpire in the 19th over.Rana admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee, bringing closure to the incident.

Ruturaj Gaikwad fined for Slow over rate

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined Rs 12 lakh following his team’s match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 11, 2026. The penalty was imposed because CSK maintained a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 clash at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. This marks the team’s first offence of the season under the IPL Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate requirements
