Veteran Odia actor Uttam Mohanty’s death has left the whole film industry in shock. He breathed his last while he was reportedly undergoing treatment for Liver Cirrhosis. With a career spanning decades, he had worked in Odia, Hindi and Bengali cinema along with TV serials. Let’s know about his journey to stardom.
Uttam Mohanty was an Indian film and television actor who has credit of working in more than 135 films, 30 Bengali films and a Hindi film as well. Born and brought up in Baripada and completed his education from MKC High School.
He made his debut with 1977 film Abhiman and was declared a box-office hit. He then went to star in several films which were commercially successful- Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja (1978), Sankha Mahuri (1978), Danda Balunga (1984), Chinha Achinha (1979), Nijhum Ratira Sathi (1979), Akshay Trutiya (1981), Debajani (1981), Samay Bada Balaban (1985), Hasa Luha Bhara Duniya (1989). Apart from films, he has also featured in TV serials including- Katha Kahuthile Saribani, Panatakani, Sara akasha, Uttardai. He has also worked in one Hindi film – Naya Jahar, opposite Satabdi Roy.
Uttam Mohanty has dominated for Odia cinema for three decades. He was loved by audience for his effortless acting in front of the camera and the charisma he had for various roles including Romantic, Village Lad, Character.
He has bagged several accolades including Odisha Living Legend Award 2012, Odisha State Film Award for Best Actor for Phula Chandana, Jhiati Sita Pari, Danda Balunga, Suna Chadhei, Jayadeb Puraskar in 1999, Awards from Critic Association- Chitrapuri, Banichitra, Chalachitra Jagata.
Mohanty later married actress Aparajita Mohanty had a son named Babushan Mohanty who has established himself as a leading Ollywood name. Aparajita started her career with Sita Labakusha in 1980. Apart from big screen, she played various roles in some Odia television serials.
