Got picked in H-1B lottery: Redditor wants to come back to India, says 'feeling weirdly sad and confused'

A Reddit user said he got picked in the H-1B lottery but wants to go back to India.

An NRI techie shared the honest feeling that even after getting picked in the recently concluded H-1B lottery, he was feeling a weird sense of sadness and confusion, and even thinking about going back to India, as the employer, which he said is a small startup, will allow him to continue the same job from India. The confession came amid a flood of disheartening posts on the American Dream coming to an end for those who did not get picked in the lottery and do not have any other option to legally stay in the US. As the Redditor sought help to contemplate the possible scenarios that if he goes back to India and regrets the decision, if he stays in the US and loses the job next year, social media users pointed out how the grass will always be greener on the other side, and the Redditor needs a clear goal to make a decision. Many suggested that he work from India for a month to see whether he would like to work from India. But at the same time, others alerted him that this option comes with the threat of getting stuck in India for an indefinite period of time because of immigration gridlock.

Redditor says H-1B lottery selection did not bring any joy because of mental burnout.

Redditor says H-1B lottery selection did not bring any joy because of mental burnout.

The Redditor explained that he lived in the US for the past four years, doing the masters and then OPT, STEM OPT and now H-1B too. “I did everything right to get here. But now that it actually happened, I feel mentally tired. Almost burned out… I always thought this would be a “finally, I made it” moment. But instead, I feel this weird sense of sadness and I don’t really understand why,” the person wrote. This was the first time the USCIS held a wage-based lottery, giving more chances to those who qualify for a higher wage base instead of a random lottery to select candidates.
