Govinda and Sunita Ahuja’s Divorce: The veteran 1990s actor is rumoured to be on the brink of separation. The couple tied the knot in 1987 and are parents to two children. Several reports claim they have decided to part ways after 37 years, with suggestions that Sunita has taken legal action and sent a notice to the actor. The official reactions are yet to come. However, controversies and rumours are not new to Govinda as he has often been in the spotlight for squishy reasons. Here are some of his most eye-rolling controversies.
When Govinda slapped a man on set
In 2008, Govinda slapped a man named Santosh Rai during the filming of Money Hai Toh Honey Hai. Rai later filed a case against him, which eventually reached the Supreme Court of India after lower courts found no evidence against the actor. Govinda defended his actions, claiming Rai was misbehaving with women on set. In 2015, the Supreme Court directed Govinda to apologise to Rai and resolve the matter out of court.

Govinda and Rani Mukerji’s affair rumours: When actor allegedly caught with an actress in hotel room
In the early 2000s, reports surfaced claiming Rani Mukerji and Govinda were in a relationship and living together. The situation escalated into a scandal when a well-known journalist allegedly discovered them in a hotel room. The story quickly made headlines, drawing huge media attention. The highly publicised affair disrupted the actor’s personal life, with the media closely following every development. However, later in interviews both actors denied the allegations.
When Govinda confesses his feelings for Neelam Kothari while being engaged to Sunita
Govinda debuted in the film industry in 1986 with Love 86, where he first met actor Neelam Kothari. During the shoot, he admitted to “losing heart” to her. In an interview, he revealed that he had wanted to marry Neelam and even ended his engagement with Sunita, although Neelam was unaware of this at the time.
In a 1990 interview with Stardust, Govinda openly shared his growing fondness for Neelam, which developed through their frequent collaborations. He described her as a woman any man would fall for. However, he eventually reconciled with Sunita.
Govinda’s fight with David Dhawan
In the 90s, Govinda and David Dhawan delivered many hit films together. However, they later had a falling out, with the actor revealing that the filmmaker didn’t support him during his tough times.
When Govinda Avatar statement invited memefest
Govinda once made a statement in an interview that went viral, claiming James Cameron had approached him years ago for Sam Worthington’s role in Avatar. He also said he had suggested the film’s title to the director. This comment led to heavy trolling and memefest. Additionally, former CBFC chief and film producer Pahlaj Nihalani later dismissed Govinda’s claims.

Govinda and his nephew Krushna had a long-standing rift, mainly due to family issues involving Govinda’s wife and a comment made by Kashmera.
