Chhaava: ₹450 Crore Collection, Still These Aspects Of Film Get Unanimously Trolled In Vicky Kaushal Starrer

Chhaava: While the Vicky Kaushal and Akshaye Khanna starrer has proved to be a stallion at the box office, some aspects of the historical film have managed to invite unanimous criticism from the viewers. Vicky’s powerful portrayal of fierce Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj has drawn immense praise and his formidable enemy, Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, played by Akshaye Khanna, has also managed to win hearts. However, some loose ends have affected the film’s impact, with music being one.

Many have agreed that the background score of Chhaava, scored by two-time Oscar winner AR Rahman, does not do justice to the otherwise technically sound movie. The use of modern-day instruments in the BGM, instead of what could have lent a more authentic tone, like traditional instruments, has been pointed out as one of the flaws. Many insisted that Chhaava is Rahman’s most “dull work” where no songs leave an impact. The score used in the battle scenes is also not befitting of the glory and valour of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj intended to be shown on screen, some suggested.

Ajay-Atul, the duo that has given scores in movies like Sairat, Natarang, Agneepath and Jhund, emerged as a strong alternative to Rahman. “Ajay-Atul could have delivered a true masterpiece,” read a social media comment about the score of Chhaava. “Ajay-Atul would’ve been perfect,” another netizen wrote.

Rashmika Mandanna ‘s portrayal of Yesubai has also come under criticism from fans. There have been comments suggesting that Mrunal Thakur, given her strong Marathi roots, could have been pitch-perfect in the role that Rashmika played. Many viewers pointed out that the role of a Marathi queen did not fit her well. “She only looks the part, acting was bland,” said a critic about the Animal actress’ role in Chhaava.

“Only thing I disliked was Rashmika’s performance. Literally reading kr rhi thi aur vo bhi sahi se nhi (my opinion),” read another comment highlighting how Yesubai’s impact was lessened by Rashmika’s one-tone performance. Divya Dutta, who essays the role of Rajmata Soyarabai Bhosale in Chhaava, came out in defense of her co-star’s acting in the movie, saying “Muje toh bahut pyari lagti hai. Let’s not forget she has given several hits.” Nevertheless, Chhaava has emerged as a hit in 10 days of its release, with a box office collection of ₹326.75 crore in India.
