Legendary Australia opener Matthew Hayden has dodged one of the strangest promises ever made in cricket, and his daughter Grace Hayden couldn’t be more relieved. The former opener had boldly stated that he would “walk naked around the MCG” if Joe Root failed to score a century in the ongoing Ashes. Fortunately for the Hayden family — and cricket viewers — Root’s unbeaten 138 in Brisbane ensured the promise didn’t have to be tested.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. “I was so grateful that Root scored a hundred. It was the first time in my life I wanted an Englishman to do well in an Ashes series,” Grace said with a laugh. Her relief didn’t stop there. Issuing a playful warning to her father, she dramatically vowed to take action if he ever made such a promise again.“Root, oh my goodness, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m disowning my father if he says he’s going to run naked around anything ever again,” she declared.WATCH:Grace also posted a cheeky message on Instagram thanking Root for “saving all our eyes.”While Grace celebrated Root’s heroics, Hayden turned his attention to England pacer Jofra Archer’s indifferent performance and off-field antics in the second Test. Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald, Hayden slammed Archer’s approach and effort.“It was really quite painful to watch… very disappointing reaction with very little humility and a whole bunch of bravado,” Hayden said, pointing to Archer’s slower spells and aggressive interactions with Steve Smith.
