NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated that Ahmedabad will likely host the 2036 Olympic Games. This announcement follows Ahmedabad’s recent successful bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.“You recently won the bid for the Commonwealth Games. But, people of Ahmedabad, be prepared, because the city is also going to welcome the Olympics in 2036,” Shah said at the Sansad Khel Mahotsav closing ceremony.During his three-day Gujarat visit, Shah mentioned that Ahmedabad will host several national and international sports events before the 2036 Olympics, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The ceremony took place at the new Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, which is part of Shah’s Gandhinagar constituency.Shah announced that the complex cost Rs 800 crore, with additional sports facilities under construction, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Motera.“I am confident that when the Olympics will be held here, India will be among the top five countries in the medal tally,” Shah declared. He noted that Indian athletes are now winning more international medals due to increased sports funding under Prime Minister Modi’s government, which rose from Rs 800 crore in 2014 to Rs 4,000 crore in 2025.Shah later inaugurated the Ahmedabad Shopping Festival at Sindhu Bhavan Road, organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
