NEW DELHI: Delhi Police constable Sonika Yadav, who is seven months pregnant, scripted an inspiring chapter in Indian sport by winning a bronze medal at the All India Police Weightlifting Cluster 2025-26 in Andhra Pradesh. Competing against top athletes, she lifted a combined total of 145 kilograms, with lifts of 125 kg in squats, 80 kg in bench press, and 145 kg in deadlift. When Sonika discovered her pregnancy in May, many expected her to pause her training. Even when her husband stepped in to assist her after the bench press, no one suspected anything unusual. The truth came to light only after her final deadlift attempt, triggering a wave of astonished applause from the audience. Female officers from different police units gathered around her, showering her with congratulations and admiration. In preparation for the event, Sonika turned to online research and drew inspiration from Lucy Martins, an international lifter known for competing while pregnant. She reached out to Lucy via Instagram, seeking advice and motivation.A 2014-batch officer, Sonika currently serves in the Community Policing Cell. Previously, as a beat officer in the Majnu Ka Tila area, she played a key role in anti-drug awareness campaigns.Watch the video hereHer commitment and achievements have been recognized before—she was felicitated by the Delhi Police Commissioner in 2022, and Union Minister Smriti Irani praised her on Women’s Day for her dedication and courage. At the Andhra Pradesh event, spectators initially assumed Sonika had switched to a different weight category. But when her 145 kg deadlift earned her a podium finish, the revelation of her pregnancy left the crowd stunned.Sonika credits her success to “courage and consistency,” saying her journey proves that determination can overcome any barrier—even during pregnancy.
