Leonardo DiCaprio to star in ‘Heat 2’

Nearly 30 years after its release, Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ is finally on way to become a franchise. Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio will reportedly play the lead in the film, the shooting for which is said to start in 2026.

Earlier this year, Mann had confirmed that he had officially turned in a draft of the ‘Heat’ sequel to Warner Bros.

According to media reports, the new story leads up to the events of the film and then moves beyond it, featuring new characters on both sides of the law, new high-profile heists, and stunning action sequences.

From the streets of Los Angeles to the inner sanctuaries of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in Paraguay to a large-scale drug cartel money-laundering scheme in Mexico, “Heat 2” sheds light on the perilous operations of international crime organisations and the agents who hunt them down as it paints a vivid picture of the men and women who live in both worlds.

Notably, in 2022, Mann and novelist Meg Gardiner had released ‘Heat 2’ as novel that works both as a prequel and sequel.

The crime epic ‘Heat’ was released in 1995, and became the gold standard for cops-and-robbers movies. It featured an ensemble cast led by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, with Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, and Val Kilmer in supporting roles. The film followed the conflict between a Los Angeles Police Department detective, played by Pacino, and a career thief, played by De Niro, while also depicting its effect on their professional relationships and personal lives.
