China moves to boost electronics self-sufficiency as US tightens chip curbs

China has released a new action plan to bolster its electronics manufacturing sector that stresses the need for resilient, self-sufficient supply chains, as the country confronts rising US export curbs on advanced chip technology.

“The electronics manufacturing industry is a strategic, foundational and leading sector of the national economy, crucial to stabilising industrial growth and safeguarding national economic and political security,” stated the 13-page document issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the State Administration for Market Regulation on Thursday.

The plan set goals for developing more advanced core technologies and enhancing supply chain security in the sector, stressing the need to adopt domestically made equipment and fill gaps in supply chains.

“We will resolutely promote the use of domestic products and continuously strengthen weak links in the industrial supply chain,” the plan said.

It also highlighted the need to focus on producing reliable components, chips and systems, and ordered officials to establish monitoring and early warning mechanisms to detect potential supply chain disruptions.
