Having already secured a place in the top two of the World Test Championship (WTC) table to defend their title in the WTC final this June against South Africa, Australia‘s 2-0 series win in Sri Lanka couldn’t take them to the top of the chart, as they stayed in second position behind table-toppers Proteas.
With 69.44 percentage points, South Africa stayed number one, while Australia concluded their campaign with 67.54 percentage points. The top two teams at the end of a two-year cycle qualify for the WTC final.

Australia dominated Sri Lanka comprehensively in both the Test matches at Galle, securing victories by an innings and 242 runs in the first Test, followed by a decisive nine-wicket win in the second match on Sunday.
The WTC final is scheduled to take place at Lord’s from June 11.
“Australia’s triumph in the Border-Gavaskar series against India helped them make their second consecutive World Test Championship final, and a 2-0 series win against Sri Lanka helped them solidify the No.2 position on the table,” said ICC in a release.
Australia had beaten India 3-1 in the five-Test Border Gavaskar Trophy series.
India’s journey in the competition came to an end after their loss in the BGT, placing them third with 50 percentage points, despite being contenders for a significant duration.
The Indian team, who reached the WTC finals twice, played 19 Tests during this cycle, winning nine matches, losing eight and drawing two.
