A 19-year-old man was found dead inside Scarborough Town Centre in Toronto on Thursday. In a news release on Saturday, Toronto police identified the victim as 19-year-old Daniel Amalathas. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they were called to the shopping centre at 300 Borough Drive just before 2 pm on Thursday following reports that someone had been shot. A shopper discovered Amalathas unconscious inside the family washroom near the lower-level food court, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators recovered a firearm in the washroom. Acting Inspector Baheer Sarvanandan told reporters on Thursday that the incident appeared to involve a single gunshot. “There was no sound of gunshots or active shooting. This happened in a very confined space that no one knew,” he said. The case was initially deemed suspicious but has now been officially ruled a homicide, Toronto police announced on Saturday. The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation and continues to monitor the situation. Police said the mall has been deemed safe at this point. Amalathas is Toronto’s 27th homicide victim of the year.
