Google will announce the biggest Android upgrade of the year this week

If you actively pay attention to smartphone launches, there are enough to keep you occupied all year round, but one of the most hotly anticipated is set to happen this week. If you’re an Android fan, there aren’t any new phone announcements as interesting or important as ones from Google, and the firm will lift the lid on its latest Pixel 10 collection this Wednesday, August 20.

This being a Google phone launch, nothing much has been left to the imagination. The company has always struggled to plug leaks of its Pixel phones, so has opted to tease the Pixel 10 Pro (above) and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold (below) on its website and social media.

We also expect there to be a Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro XL to round off the range.

From Official teasers and other various leaks, the phones look to be incredibly similar in design to the Pixel 9. This is unusual for the Pixel line as until now, Google has consistently changed the design every year. But Pixels also have a bit of a reputation for unreliable hardware, with both the Pixel 4a and Pixel 6a recently requiring software updates to fix dangerous battery issues. In both cases, Google has had to offer some customers compensation.

Perhaps sticking with the same design as the Pixel 9 is a way of Google steadying the ship. One of the only noticeable changes is that the standard Pixel 10 seemingly is gaining a telephoto camera, meaning it’ll have triple lenses, the same as the 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL will have – though the sensors will probably be different to claim the Pros are superior.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks very similar to the 9 Pro Fold, though leaks claim the screens are slightly larger. It has a fight on its hands to impress given the ultra-slim Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is now on the scene.

What you should expect overall from the Pixel 10 range is tweaked specs and a boatload of AI. Previous models have introduced photo editing tools such as Magic Eraser and Best Take, which let you scrub out people or objects or choose people’s different faces from a selection of shots to make the ‘best’ image.

The phone will also be packed to the gills with Google Gemini, whether you like it or not. This AI companion can answer queries, perform app actions, create images, translate text, summarise emails and much more besides.

All will be revealed on Wednesday August 20 at 6pm UK time. You can watch the launch on the official Made by Google Youtube channel.
