California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday in a X post announced that the state will move ahead with drawing new congressional maps, saying the changes could help Democrats regain control of the US House of Representatives and end President Donald Trump’s time in office. In a social media post styled after Trump’s all-caps messages, Newsom wrote that “Donald ‘Taco’ Trump… missed the deadline” and that California would now create “beautiful maps” that would be “historic” in helping Democrats take back the House.“Donald “Taco” Trump, as many call him, “missed” the deadline!!! California will now draw new, more “beautiful maps,” they will be historic as they will end the Trump presidency (dems take back the house!). Big press conference this week with powerful dems and Gavin Newsom — your favorite governor — that will be devastating for “MAGA.” Thank you for your attention to this matter!” the post read. The announcement comes as Texas Republicans work to redraw congressional maps to benefit their party. This redistricting dispute has prompted some Democratic-led states to threaten retaliation, with Governor Newsom suggesting the removal of five Republican-held seats in California. The redistricting conflict in Texas and possibly in other states carries national significance, as it could influence control of the US House of Representatives. The Texas GOP’s proposed map could give Republicans an additional three to five seats in next year’s midterm elections, potentially helping them maintain their narrow majority in the chamber.A spokesperson for California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas confirmed that draft maps are expected to be released Friday, as reported by ABC News. Newsom said he will take part in the press conference this week with “powerful” Democrats, though he did not name them. On Monday, he sent a letter to Trump urging him to tell Texas Governor Greg Abbott and other Republican governors to stop trying to create new congressional maps.In Texas, Democrats have boycotted legislative sessions to block the GOP maps, preventing the state House from reaching a quorum. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows said the chamber will meet again Friday and warned that if there is still no quorum, Abbott will end the current session and immediately call a second special session.
