Bollywood icon Rekha, who made a scintillating appearance in ‘Kaisi Paheli’ in Vidya Balan-starrer ‘Parineeta’, says it was not just a song; it was a mood, a vibe, and a metaphor for life.
“The track was so atmospheric; it reminded me of the time gone by and a certain enigma of a woman who owns her narrative,” said the legendary actress who left the fans awestruck with her effortless elegance, captivating screen presence, and nuanced expressions in the song.
Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, the track was composed by Shantanu Moitra and penned by Swanand Kirkire. It is till date considered one of the best jazz songs in Hindi cinema.
“Even 20 years ago, it stood out; the composition was rare, and the poetry was unlike most songs of that time. As I stepped onto that jazz club set, I became the jazz singer. Even today, when I hear the song, it brings a smile… It’s one of those Pahelis you never want to solve; you just want to live it,” Rekha remarked.

Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, ‘Parineeta’ is a screen adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s iconic 1914 Bengali novel.
The film is all set to be re-released across theatres on its 20th anniversary on August 29.
‘Parineeta’ follows the story of Lalita (Vidya Balan) and Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan), childhood friends whose bond blossoms into an unspoken love. However, their romance is tested by the cruel hand of fate and the rigid societal norms of the era. The film also stars Sanjay Dutt.
The film has been restored by Prasad Film Labs.
