Former England Test captain Michael Vaughan believes Harry Brook should succeed Ben Stokes as the future England captain, citing his natural leadership qualities on the field.Brook demonstrated his value with an impressive 111 runs off 98 balls in the ongoing Test match, positioning England within 35 runs of victory with four wickets remaining on the final day.

Vaughan, who led England to 26 victories in 51 Tests as captain, suggests Brook could be a better choice for captain than current vice-captain Ollie Pope.“Harry Brook, to me, looks a leader. He looks a born leader,” Vaughan told the Test Match Special podcast.“If Ben Stokes is injured in the future can’t Pope stay as vice-captain and Harry Brook gets the leadership role?”Brook, who represents Yorkshire, has already shown leadership potential by captaining England’s white-ball team and securing a victory against West Indies in his first series.

Do you think Harry Brook has the potential to lead England in the future?

“I look at someone like Ollie Pope, who looks a fantastic vice-captain. He is a brilliant person to have next to the captain to come up with ideas. Sometimes vice-captains aren’t brilliant captains,” he added.“Marcus Trescothick was a magnificent vice-captain for me, but you wouldn’t want to give him the captaincy.”Pope, at age 27, is currently serving as England’s Test captain for the fifth time, having previously led the team during Stokes’ hamstring injury last year.“I don’t know well enough and am not in the dressing room. I just want the best captain who is the best leader leading the England side. I don’t think a good vice-captain will necessarily be a good captain,” Vaughan said.
