Shubman Gill, speaking ahead of the 4th Test in Manchester, did not hold back against the hosts as he criticised England’s time-wasting tactics during the Lord’s Test. He also provided several key updates ahead of the all-important penultimate Test, where a win for England would seal the series in their favour. India fell heartbreakingly short at Lord’s, where a marathon effort from Ravindra Jadeja wasn’t enough to take them over the line. As England secured a 22-run victory, Gill and his men were left to rue the missed chances. Addressing the media, India captain Gill offered a crucial update on wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has been a lively presence in the Indian squad and an indispensable figure, both with the bat and behind the stumps. Substitute Dhruv Jurel took over wicketkeeping duties for most of the 3rd Test after Pant injured his left index finger attempting a diving stop off Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery on Day 1. However, Pant still contributed with the bat, scoring 74 in the first innings and 9 in the second.

Gill confirmed during the press conference that Rishabh Pant will resume wicketkeeping duties. The 27-year-old recently made headlines when the Indian team visited Premier League side Manchester United. He shared pictures with United goalkeeper Tom Heaton, as the duo engaged in a light-hearted exchange of keeping skills. Additionally, Gill discussed the team’s tactical plans, saying, “Nine-ten players are mostly same for every condition. That one or two players change depending on conditions. We have been discussing about starting and closing sessions well. Sometimes it’s not in your control.”

How crucial is Rishabh Pant’s return to wicketkeeping for India?

Acknowledging the challenge posed by injuries to the bowling unit, he said, “Akash Deep is unavailable, so is Arshdeep, but we have good players in the team to pick twenty wickets. It is not ideal to have different bowlers, but I was prepared.” With the series at a crucial juncture and India needing a win to stay alive, all eyes will be on Gill and his side as they look to pull off a strong comeback at Old Trafford.
