Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs offered a sharp take on India’s narrow 22-run defeat to England at Lord’s, calling out the visitors’ approach in the tense final innings chase. “Came close in the end but lack of intent cost India the game,” Gibbs posted on X shortly after England sealed the victory and went 2-1 up in the five-match series.India were chasing 193 for victory but folded for 170, despite a fighting unbeaten 61 from Ravindra Jadeja. The match had plenty of drama and tension, especially during the final session as Jadeja shepherded the tail with resilience. But the game ended in heartbreak when Mohammed Siraj played on to Shoaib Bashir, ending India’s innings with 23 runs still to get.

England had seized the initiative early in the day, reducing India from their overnight 58 for 4 to 112 for 8 by lunch. Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes bowled hostile spells, with Archer finishing the match with 3 for 55 and Stokes delivering long, tireless spells that broke India’s resistance.India’s batting collapse in the first innings had already cost them momentum. From 376 for 6, they lost four wickets for just 11 runs to be bowled out for 387, squandering a golden chance to build a sizeable first-innings lead.

Do you agree with Herschelle Gibbs’ assessment of India’s approach?

Gibbs’ remark summed up the mood across the cricket world. There was admiration for India’s fight but also frustration over their lack of urgency. Many believe that a more positive approach in key moments, might have turned the game in their favour.
