NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings have roped in emerging Australian all-rounder Mitchell Owen as a replacement for the injured Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2025 Indian Premier League season with a fractured finger.
The injury adds to a forgettable campaign for Maxwell, who managed just 48 runs in seven appearances this year, with six single-digit scores. He sustained the injury ahead of PBKS’ abandoned fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on April 26.

The IPL confirmed the development via a statement: “Punjab Kings have picked all-rounder Mitch Owen as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to a broken finger.”
Who’s that IPL player?
The 23-year-old Tasmanian, a powerful right-handed batter and seam-bowling option, has been signed for Rs 3 crore.
Owen comes into the IPL spotlight following a sensational 2024/25 Big Bash League season where he scored 452 runs at an average of 45.20 and a stunning strike rate of 203.60, including two centuries.

Poll

Do you think Mitchell Owen can fill the void left by Glenn Maxwell in the IPL?

His recent stints in SA20 and PSL had mixed outcomes, but his potential was enough to earn him spots in both leagues. Across 34 T20 matches, Owen has racked up 646 runs and picked up 10 wickets.
Owen is known for his intimidating presence at the crease, capable of clearing boundaries with brute force. His aggressive style, long levers, and handy bowling make him a promising T20 asset.

As PBKS look to stay afloat in the playoff race, Owen’s arrival could provide the much-needed x-factor.
