NEW DELHI: Lucknow Super Giants’ latest sensation Digvesh Rathi has become a talking point this IPL season. And it is not just for his skills, but for his repeated “notebook” celebration that has now cost him heavily.
Against Mumbai Indians on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium, Rathi’s signature celebration once again stole the show as he dismissed dangerous Ryan Rickelton for 58.
It all started during LSG’s match against Punjab Kings, when Rathi dismissed opener Priyansh Arya and celebrated by pretending to write in a notebook. While the gesture was playful, match officials found it provocative and unsportsmanlike. As a result, Rathi was fined 25% of his match fee (Rs 1,87,500) and given one demerit point.
However, the warning didn’t deter him.

Just four days later, during a match against Mumbai Indians, Rathi once again pulled out the same celebration after dismissing Naman Dhir.
This time, the IPL disciplinary committee acted even more firmly, slapping a 50% fine (Rs 3,75,000) and handing him a second Level 1 offence. Rathi’s demerit points now stand at three for the season.
In total, the young spinner has been fined Rs 5,62,500 so far for his controversial celebrations.

The incidents have sparked a wide range of reactions on social media.
Many fans are enjoying Rathi’s boldness, while others feel he needs to show more maturity on the field. Memes and jokes flooded platforms, with many users joking, “Yeh nahi sudhrega” (He won’t change).

Despite the growing fines and warnings, Rathi seems unfazed, sticking to the celebration that has now become his signature. While T20 cricket encourages passion and excitement, the IPL has made it clear that celebrations must not cross into disrespect.
