Trump tariffs : Government assures support to exporters

The government has assured exporters that it will provide a conducive environment to enable them to navigate the recent changes in the global trade environment, according to an official press release.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal held a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday with representatives of export promotion councils and industry bodies and deliberated on the impact and opportunities.

Mr. Goyal pointed out that in 2024-2025, Indian exports were $ 820 billion, which is nearly 6 % growth over previous fiscal year.

He also apprised the exporters regarding discussions with the U.S. for a mutually beneficial multi-sectoral Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The government is working to expedite the agreement, exploring ‘the right mix and the right balance’ and is not in ‘undue haste’ so that there is the right outcome for the country.

He added that different countries are approaching the tariff imposition in a different manner. However, for India there is a potential to increase manufacturing.

One of the heads of the export promotion council representatives who participated in the meeting said the government has assured that it will look at different schemes to support the exporters and plans to continue some of the existing export promotion schemes. Various sectors have represented their requirements to the government.
