In a landmark decision for the global archery community, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially added the compound mixed team event to the archery programme for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This marks the first time compound archery will feature at the Olympics, making its debut alongside the existing five recurve events.
The inclusion of compound archery represents a historic milestone, as it is the first new bowstyle added since archery’s reintroduction to the Olympics in 1972. The addition brings the total number of archery medals in LA28 to six, while maintaining gender balance and athlete quotas.

World Archery president Prof Dr Ugur Erdener, who was recently awarded the Olympic Order, hailed the decision as “monumental” for the sport. He thanked IOC President Thomas Bach and the LA28 Organising Committee for their support, and expressed pride in the global archery community for helping make this dream a reality.
Compound archery, invented in the USA, uses cams and pulleys for greater power and precision. It has been a fixture at the World Games since 2013 and various continental multi-sport events.

World Archery secretary general Tom Dielen emphasised the bowstyle’s rise to prominence through equal treatment with recurve in international competitions, including the Archery World Cup.
Details on format, athlete quotas, and qualification for LA28 will follow soon. The 2028 Games will mark a new chapter for the sport, giving millions of compound archers long-awaited Olympic recognition.
