HDFC Bank’s new CEO Anup Bagchi: From ICICI to the top job

Anup Bagchi brings over three decades of experience across banking, capital markets, insurance and financial services to HDFC Bank’s top job.

Anup Bagchi, who has more than three decades of experience across banking, capital markets, treasury, wealth management and insurance, has been appointed as the new Managing Director and CEO of HDFC Bank.

Bagchi has been associated with the ICICI Group since 1992, building a career across retail banking, wholesale banking, investment banking, treasury and digital financial services.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore, Bagchi has held several senior leadership positions within the ICICI Group.

Before taking charge at HDFC Bank, Bagchi was the MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, a position he has held since June 2023. He previously served as Executive Director at ICICI Bank from 2017 to 2023, where he oversaw retail, business and rural banking before moving to wholesale banking.

During his tenure at ICICI Bank, Bagchi focused on strengthening the lender’s retail franchise through tighter credit underwriting and cost discipline. Under his leadership, ICICI Bank became the first private sector lender in India to cross the Rs 2 lakh crore mark in retail mortgage loans.

Bagchi also played a role in maintaining operational continuity at the bank during the 2016 demonetisation period, when banks faced a sharp surge in customer activity and cash-related transactions.
