French inflation accelerates to 2.7% in August as energy prices rise

France’s harmonised inflation rate climbed from 2.4% in July, driven mainly by higher energy prices, particularly oil products.

French consumer price inflation accelerated in August, preliminary data from statistics agency INSEE showed on Friday, highlighting renewed price pressures in the euro zone’s second-largest economy.

France’s harmonised inflation rate, which is adjusted for comparison with other euro zone countries, rose to 2.7 per cent year-on-year in August, up from 2.4 per cent in July.

INSEE attributed the increase primarily to higher energy prices, with oil products playing a key role in pushing inflation higher.

The latest reading comes as markets continue to closely monitor inflation trends across the euro zone for clues about the outlook for interest rates and monetary policy.

The preliminary August figure will be subject to further revisions as additional data become available.
