The internal rift within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) continues to widen following the recent political shift in West Bengal, with fresh signs of fragmentation emerging from North Dinajpur district. Mosharraf Hossain, the influential MLA from Itahar, has resigned from his position as the state president of the party’s minority cell on Sunday. He announced his decision during a press conference held at his residence.
Hossain stated that he had already submitted his resignation letter to the party leadership at Kalighat. Citing personal reasons, he said his mother has been critically ill, and he needs to remain by her side. He had returned home only a few days ago after completing the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
He explained that due to his family circumstances and mental stress, it was not possible for him to fulfill his responsibilities within the party or attend the Assembly session.
Notably, Hossain was absent from the first day of the budget session of the newly formed BJP-led state government last Friday, which had sparked speculation in political circles.
Hossain admitted to maintaining regular contact with the ‘Real Trinamool’ faction led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee. “It is no longer possible to work as before following the change in the state’s ruling power. In the interest of local development, I have consulted with Ritabrata and aligned myself with him,” he said.
The Itahar MLA also praised Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, recalling their past association when Adhikari had served as the party’s observer for North Dinajpur. “I have always shared a cordial relationship with him. My goal is the overall development of the region, and I want to be part of that process under his leadership,” he added.
With this move, the political landscape in North Dinajpur has undergone a significant shift. Of the district’s five TMC MLAs, four had earlier distanced themselves from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction and joined the ‘Real Trinamool’ camp. Hossain’s exit now leaves the mainstream TMC effectively isolated in the district. Suggest headlines.
