FIH Women's Hockey World Cup: India go down 0-2 to Netherlands

The Indian women’s hockey team suffered a 0-2 defeat to the Netherlands in their second-round match of the FIH World Cup on Friday.The Netherlands, the reigning Olympic and world champions, controlled much of the contest and scored once in each of the first and third quarters.

Yibbi Jansen put the Netherlands ahead in the second minute through a penalty corner.India stayed in the contest but struggled to create clear chances against the Dutch defence. The Netherlands doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Frederique Matla converted another penalty corner.Both Dutch goals came from set pieces.

India must beat Australia

The defeat leaves India with a tough task in their final second-round match.India will face Australia on Sunday and need a win to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.Australia were held to a 1-1 draw by China in another second-round match earlier on Friday.

India had entered second round unbeaten

India reached the second round after finishing second in Pool D.They had earlier drawn with China and beaten South Africa before playing out a 0-0 draw against England in their final pool match on Thursday.China topped Pool D, while India moved into the next stage with one point carried forward from their draw against China.
