NEW DELHI: Kirsty Coventry has been elected as the first female president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
IOC members voted on Thursday to appoint Coventry, a seven-time Olympic swimming medalist, for an eight-year term, which can be extended for an additional four years.
When her term begins on June 24, Coventry will also make history as the first African to serve as IOC President.

At 41, she will be the second-youngest president in the IOC’s history, following Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics.
