While Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela starrer musical drama directed by Anurag Basu may not have found a release date yet, the project seems to be out of the long-drawn legal battle over its purported title. Production house T-Series told the Delhi High Court on Friday, August 14, that it has changed the title of its upcoming Kartik-Sreeleela’s film from Tu Hi Aashiqui to Tu Meri Zindagi Hai in a bid to bring an end to a trademark dispute with Mukesh Bhatt’s Vishesh Films.
Back in September 2022, Kartik announced the film with Anurag under the title Aashiqui 3, the third installment of the blockbuster hit Aashiqui franchise.
The first movie released in 1990 and featured Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal. Aashiqui 2, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, followed in 2013 and was directed by Mohit Suri. Kartik’s film was supposed to be another entry in the romantic film series. However, in late 2024, Vishesh Films, one of the producers behind the project, filed a lawsuit against T-Series, alleging the latter was “unilaterally exploiting ownership” over the Aashiqui franchise and taking steps towards making a third installment of the film with Kartik.
Vishesh Films emphasised that it is the registered proprietor of the device marks Aashiqui, registered in 2013, which they have been using since 1990, and Aashiqui Ke Liye registered in 2014. It also objected to T-Series using title derivatives of the Aashiqui franchise, leading to confusion. T-Series argued that Kartik’s film – Tu Hi Aashiqui or Tu Hi Aashiqui Hai – is not a derivative work of either of the Aashiqui movies. The banner said that it will not project or promote the proposed movie Tu Hi Aashiqui or Tu Hi Aashiqui Hai as part of the Aashiqui film franchise.
In the latest update in the case, T-Series told the court that it will rename the film as Tu Meri Zindagi Hai to avoid the Aashiqui trademark dispute. As per the production house, Kartik’s movie has no relation to the Aashiqui franchise and has a different cast and storyline.
As per Live Law, T-Series also proposed that the lawsuit by Vishesh Films be given a “quietus” by recording the new title of their film as Tu Meri Zindagi Hai and directing that it be made a joint proprietor of the two trademarks – Aashiqui and Aashiqui Ke Liye.
The matter will come up for hearing on August 31.
