Reliance, Rolls-Royce join hands to develop indigenous AMCA combat engine


Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce plan to build a sovereign aero-engine ecosystem in India, including a proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex for the AMCA programme.

Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce on Friday announced their strategic intent to partner on the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of an indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

The companies will explore setting up a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India as a centre for power and propulsion technology. The proposed facility is expected to support capabilities spanning design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support.

Anant Ambani, Executive Director, Reliance Industries, said the partnership aims to create an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem. “India’s strategic autonomy requires sovereign capability in critical technologies,” he said, adding that the companies seek to build an enduring national capability in advanced propulsion.

Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç called the move “a major milestone towards building a robust, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country”.

The alliance is positioned as a step towards India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and could also open avenues for collaboration in defence, civil aerospace and next-generation power and propulsion systems.
