Air India will resume non-stop flights between New Delhi and Toronto from August 1, deploying its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the route and eliminating the fuel stop in Vienna.
The move will reduce the Delhi-Toronto journey by nearly three hours, the airline said in a statement.
The outbound flight from Delhi to Toronto will take about 17 hours, compared with nearly 20 hours at present, which includes the Vienna stop. The return Toronto-Delhi service will continue to operate non-stop, with a flying time of up to 16 hours.
The restoration of non-stop services comes more than a year after the closure of Pakistani airspace in early 2025 forced Air India to take longer routes on several flights to North America and Europe.
Daily flights to Toronto restored
From August 1, Air India will also increase its Delhi-Toronto frequency to daily operations from the current five weekly flights.
The airline had temporarily reduced the frequency between June and July 2026 amid sharp fuel price increases and wider geopolitical developments that affected operating conditions.
Under the new schedule, Air India flight AI187 will depart Delhi at 1:45 am and arrive in Toronto at 9:30 am local time.
The return flight, AI188, will leave Toronto at 12:30 pm and reach Delhi at 2:05 pm the following day.
Air India said bookings for the upgraded service are now open through its website, mobile app, customer contact centre and authorised travel agents.
New Boeing 787-9 to offer Premium Economy
The new Boeing 787-9 will also introduce Air India’s Premium Economy cabin on the Delhi-Toronto route for the first time.
The aircraft will feature a three-class layout with 30 Business Class suites, 28 Premium Economy seats and 238 Economy Class seats.
Business Class passengers will get fully flat beds, direct aisle access, wireless charging, larger entertainment screens and additional storage space.
The Premium Economy cabin will offer wider seats in a 2-3-2 configuration, a 38-inch seat pitch, adjustable leg rests and larger entertainment screens.
Economy Class passengers will also benefit from redesigned seats for long-haul travel and upgraded in-flight entertainment systems.
The aircraft will additionally feature mood lighting inspired by Indian wellness traditions, more than 3,000 hours of entertainment content, Bluetooth audio connectivity, USB charging ports, AC power outlets and refreshed in-flight dining and amenity kits.
Air India expands newer aircraft on international routes
Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the airline was steadily expanding the availability of its newest aircraft and latest cabin products across key international routes.
“The introduction of our new Boeing 787-9 on the Delhi-Toronto route marks another important milestone, bringing a significantly enhanced travel experience to customers between India and Canada while extending our most premium offerings across North America,” Wilson said.
Canada is home to one of the world’s largest Indian diaspora communities, making Toronto a key international market for Air India.
The airline currently operates a fleet of nearly 190 aircraft and has been gradually expanding the deployment of newer aircraft and upgraded cabin products across its long-haul international network.
The Boeing 787-9 has a longer range than the legacy Boeing 777 aircraft currently used on the route. It will allow Air India to operate the Delhi-Toronto service without the present fuel stop in Vienna, subject to available airspace.
The return of daily non-stop services is expected to offer a faster and more convenient travel option for passengers flying between India and Canada, especially the large Indian diaspora community in the Toronto region.
