India’s gem and jewellery exports jump 26.5% in June on stronger global demand – Firstpost

India’s gem and jewellery exports staged a strong recovery in June 2026, with gross exports rising 26.5 per cent year-on-year to USD 2.21 billion, supported by robust demand from key international markets and a decline in global gold prices, according to the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

The export body said the rebound was led by strong overseas demand for gold jewellery, cut and polished diamonds, platinum jewellery and lab-grown diamonds, signalling improved momentum for the sector after a relatively stable first quarter.

Commenting on the performance, GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali said the June recovery reflects the resilience of India’s gem and jewellery industry despite an evolving global trade environment.

He noted that while overall exports during the April-June quarter remained broadly stable, the sharp improvement in June is an encouraging indicator. Continued demand from major export markets, efforts to diversify destinations and recently concluded trade agreements, including the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), are expected to support export growth in the coming months.

According to GJEPC, international gold prices declined 10.28 per cent month-on-month in June, reducing input costs for manufacturers and allowing Indian exporters to offer more competitive prices in overseas markets.

The council also attributed the recovery to stronger global demand and active participation by Indian exporters in jewellery exhibitions held in Kuwait and Sharjah. However, it cautioned that gold availability for exporters continues to be impacted by a technical regulatory issue related to the applicability of GST on imports by RBI-notified nominated agencies.

Among key product categories, gold jewellery exports surged 54.5 per cent year-on-year to USD 1.09 billion, while studded gold jewellery exports jumped 85.35 per cent during the month.

Exports of cut and polished diamonds increased 8.71 per cent, platinum jewellery shipments rose 34.77 per cent, and polished lab-grown diamonds recorded a robust 52.25 per cent growth. However, exports of silver jewellery and coloured gemstones declined during June.

For the April-June quarter of FY27, India’s overall gross gem and jewellery exports stood at  $6.61 billion, registering a marginal 0.04 per cent growth in dollar terms and 10.76 per cent growth in rupee terms compared with the corresponding period last year.

GJEPC said the quarterly performance highlights the industry’s resilience despite global economic uncertainties and elevated precious metal prices.
